GUST 3 vs AUM 0 (on penalties)

It was an exciting week for GUST as our Men’s Football team took out the Championship against arch rivals AUM in a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Barrak Yaqout became the GUST hero of the night with some dramatic saves that sealed the victory. At the final whistle it was all tied up 0-0, in a match that was lacking in chances but filled with intensity and emotion.

A penalty shootout ensued, and in a feat that demonstrated real talent, Yaqout saved the first 3 penalties in a row allowing leading scorer in the tournament Ali Al Bassam, outstanding midfielder Ali Al Ali and Captian Mubarak Al Hajri to slot home their shots from the spot to secure the win and ultimately the UAAK Football championship. The team was thoroughly deserving of the title, as they were unbeaten throughout the tournament, playing an exciting and creative brand of football throughout the season. Congratulations to Coach Mohammed and his team for an outstanding season and well taken victory in the final.

Match Reports: Men’s and Women’s Basketball

Semi Finals:

GUST Women 31 vs ACK 24

Both the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams lost their semi-final matches against AUM and ACK respectively. The Women were first up and just couldn’t get the ball to sink through the net, missing shot after shot after creating plenty of chances. It was a disappointing end to a last minute flurry going down at the final whistle by 7points 31-24.

GUST Men 37 vs AUM 56

The men suffered a similar fate against a top rate AUM team packed with national players. GUST were almost absent in the first half as they found themselves behind at the break by 23-2. Not even a spirited comeback and an AUM team change due to foul count was enough to get them close as they went down 37-56.

3rd & 4th Playoffs:

GUST Men 63 vs ACK 57

However the Men went some way to redeeming that effort in the 3rd and 4th playoff as they secured a victory in overtime after the scores were tied at 51 a piece. Abdullah Basheer once again demonstrated his value to the team as he pulled out his A-game during the stretch of overtime with some well-taken free throw shots and deft passes to lead the GUST men to a well-deserved 3rd place in the league.

 GUST Women 18 vs 29

Unfortunately the Women couldn’t match the Men’s heroics as they were bullied around the court by an AUM team set on revenge after the slaughtering they received last time the two teams met in the pool play. GUST were no match for AUM this time round as AUM turned the tables on them and GUST found themselves down at half time by 18-6. GUST’s mistakes and missed shots were costly in the end and the girls were visibly upset at their performance after the match, as they took a disappointing fourth in the UAAK competition for 2015.
