GUST Men’s Soccer Team Wins 3rd Place at Belgrade International University Sports Tournament in Serbia
GUST men’s and women’s soccer teams attended the 9th annual Belgrade International University Sports Tournament (BEST) in Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament brought together different from across Europe, Russia, and the Middle East to compete at an international level, experience different cultures, and forge international friendships.
The standout team of the tournament was the GUST men’s team who won 3rd place in the competition. Students from DIF University, Serbia, GUST, American University of Beirut, Lebanon, FON University, Serbia, and Sabanci University, Turkey, came to support their teams. Representatives of the Kuwaiti Embassy also attended the matches to see the GUST men’s soccer team in action.
BEST Organizer, (Name), said, “In a great football competition held over three days, the GUST male football team was an absolute surprise. They played their football like wizards and fought like Spartans with only luck standing between them and the gold medal.”
The teams spent five days in Belgrade. Upon their arrival, they registered, had a comprehensive tour of Belgrade, and started training for the tournament. The following days were spent playing against their adversaries, ending the journey with the semi-final, where GUST’s men’s team won 3rd place.
GUST Athletics Director, Craig Drennan, said, “Our result was a credit to the team’s dedication and persistence, with the guidance of Coach Mohammed Al Senusi and Captain Mubarak Al Hajiri. GUST striker Ali Al Bassam showed his class as top scorer in the tournament with five goals in four matches, while Captain Mubarak Al Hajiri was awarded GUST MVP for his consistent outstanding performances.”
The women’s soccer team also garnered praise and were recognized for best sporting behaviour in the tournament.
One of the organizers at BEST mentioned “We would love to see GUST return to Belgrade in 2017 for our 10th Anniversary University Sports Tournament. “
BEST tournaments have been taking place every year in Belgrade for the past nine years. GUST has been invited to participate in next year’s tournament, which coincides with the organization’s ten year anniversary.
